Dalla fine del secolo scorso numerosi studiosi hanno analizzato la capacità che i linguaggi visivi e le immagini stesse possano avere di ‘argomentare’. In realtà la visual argumentation ha solide radici nella retorica greca e romana, che già distingueva tra l’utilizzo di veri e propri supporti visivi e l’uso della parola in funzione immaginativa e suggestiva. Oggi, di fronte allo strapotere delle immagini, è più che mai opportuno mantenere un equilibrato rapporto tra immagini e parole, come consigliavano i retori antichi. Benché non sia agevole ricostruire una linea di continuità fra tecniche retoriche antiche e moderne, una comparazione tra le une e le altre è un esercizio possibile ed utile.
Since the end of the last century, many scholars have studied the capability of visual languages and images themselves to “argue”. Visual argumentation is deeply rooted in Greek and Roman rhet-oric, which already distinguished between the use of real visual tools and the use of words for pro-ducing images and suggestions. Today, it is more than ever necessary to establish a balanced rela-tionship between images and words, as the ancient rhetoricians already prescribed. Although it is not easy to reconstruct a continuity between ancient and modern rhetorical techniques, comparing them to each other is a possible and useful exercise.
